NumKit Speeds Macsyma's

Numerical Linear Algebra

The NumkitTM add-on package for Macsyma 2.3 significantly improves the speed of real and complex floating point linear algebra and some other numerical operations. With NumKit, the affected Macsyma operations gain the speed of FORTRAN libraries.

NumKit adds automatic storage management and subroutine dispatching based on data type of input; it is fully integrated into the Macsyma environment. When NumKit is available, Macsyma uses it for matrix and vector norms, determinants, matrix inversion, LU decomposition, singular value decomposition, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, numerical roots of polynomials, least squares fits, and for solving underdetermined and overdetermined systems of linear equations. You can also access many Lapack commands directly from Macsyma.

NumKit is available for Windows 95 and NT, but not for Windows 3.X.

NumKit is based on the LAPACK linear algebra library for floating point linear algebra made available by the U.S. Department of Energy. You can find detailed documentation on LAPACK in the LAPACK Users' Guide (1995, SIAM) and through the Internet at http://www.netlib.org/lapack/.

NumKit is much easier to use than LAPACK because NumKit performs type dispatching, manages temporary storage and is integrated into the Macsyma environment.

NumKit is included with the Professional version of Macsyma 2.3. It is not available with the student version.
